Program: Learning Through the Arts
Prison Performing Arts strives to nurture the discipline, teamwork and communication skills necessary for successful re-entry into society for incarcerated youth and adults through the performing arts. In 2016, Learning Through the Arts will provide year-round performing arts classes for youths, ages 10-17, at the St. Louis City Juvenile Detention Center, Hogan Street Regional Youth Center, and the Family Court’s Detention Alternatives Program. And recently the program has expanded to Quest Day Treatment Facility and to youths who have been certified as adults at St. Louis City Justice Center. The program aims to help rehabilitate youths through acting, ballet, creative writing, and West African drumming classes. At the end of the year participating youth at St. Louis City Juvenile Detention Center have the opportunity to present their learning experience to a live audience, through the Prison Performing Art’s Winter Showcase.
